The Geography. Afghanistan is a dry and mountainous country. Two-thirds of the country is covered by mountains, and almost half of the land is a desert. The type of climate is arid, which is very dry so it is hard to sustain any vegetation. The limited forests are only seen in the far Eastern part of the country.
The Current State. Afghanistan's environment is troubling. Desertification is a major problem in the area, and it has many negative effects on the country. It is caused mainly by overgrazing and poor farming techniques. Deforestation has also been a major problem, most of the forests in Afghanistan have been burned or cut down by the use of heavy war technology and chemicals.

Environmental Nightmare. The ongoing wars that occurred in Afghanistan over the years have led to a major problem. During these wars a lot of land mines were placed all over the country for defensive purposes, but the ones that were never detonated or removed are still in the ground and active. The amount of land mines scattered throughout the country is estimated to be around 10 million, with some going off everyday. About 20 people are killed each day by going over active land mines.
Pollution. Air quality is a problem in Afghanistan, like most other countries, although it is not a major problem because there is not a lot of heavy industry. A large amount of the pollution comes from other countries like Iran, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. There is also a problem with smog in the major urban areas.

Water Management. The water supply in Afghanistan is an ongoing issue. The dry climate and long droughts make having water for farming and fresh water for people very difficult. For a while, groundwater had been drilled for and used, but that drained some of the wetlands and the supply of water quickly ran low. Now they use a combination of the water from the wetlands and from dams they have set up on the Helmand River.
